Strong Debuts for Loper Volleyball

Setter Erin Seele
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team opened up the 2013 season in dominating fashion by sweeping both William Jewell and Chadron State Friday at the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Fall Classic at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK pounded the Cardinals (-13, -11, -14) in the early afternoon and gave up just 23 points to the Eagles (-9, -6, -8) in the evening.  Beating Chadron for a 57th straight time, dating back to 1983, this is believed to be the first time in the rally scoring era UNK has held its opponent under 10 points in each set.

The Lopers did all this minus starters Katie Sokolowski and MJ Massent, who were both out with minor injuries.  In their place, true freshmen Bailey Sokolowski (Kearney Catholic), Kinslie TeKolste (Lincoln SE) and Annie Wolfe (Omaha Marian) starred, as did sophomore setter Erin Seele (Johnstown, Colo.).

Replacing All-American Jenna Rouzee, Seele handed out 56 assists today and directed an offense that hit .407 against WJC and .403 vs. Chadron. She also supplied nine kills, 10 digs and two aces.

TeKolste had eight kills and seven digs in each match, hitting a superb .388 along the way. She also recorded five blocks at the net. Helping out in the passing game, Wolfe had 16 digs and also had several long service runs.

In the front row, Sokolowski finished with nine combined kills and eight blocks. She also didn't have a hitting error in either match.

Among UNK veterans, senior outside Ashley Leitner (Lincoln SW) had team-highs in kills in both matches, going for 14 vs. the Cards and nine against the Eagles.
