UNK Upsets # 22 Bloomsburg, Earns First Win Over a Ranked D1 Team

Mark Fiala earned a key win at 184 lbs.
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team got back-to-back falls from senior Brock Coutu and junior Tyler Anderson to upset 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg (Pa.), 21-17, in a consolation bracket dual Saturday morning in Hampton, Val.

On Friday, the Lopers (5-1) lost to 15th-ranked Virginia Tech and beat George Mason.

UNK advances to face Tennessee-Chattanooga at 3:00 p.m. Central. Regardless how that goes, the Lopers will wrestle again at 5:00 p.m. Central.

Both teams were shorthanded as UNK was minus nationally-ranked Daniel DeShazer (1st/133 lbs.) and Chase White (3rd/157 lbs.) with the Huskies without eighth-ranked Bryce Busler (149 lbs.). He was apparently injured in Friday's second dual.

UNK took advantage of Busler's absence by taking an 18-4 lead and then getting a key win from senior Mark Fiala (184 lbs.) to record the dual win.

At 125 lbs., Central City sophomore Connor Bolling used a first period reversal and third period takedown to win 5-1.

Coutu (Griswold, Conn.), who went 2-0 on Friday at 141 lbs., trailed 4-3 entering the second period but an escape and takedown put him in front. He then pinned sophomore Matt Rappo at 3:38

Anderson (Clay Center, Kans.) changed the match as his fall at 3:49 helped him comeback from a 5-0 hole. Junior Derek Goodwin got out to that lead thanks to three near fall points in the first period.

Sophomore reserve Colton Johnson (Burke, S.D.) recorded UNK's third straight win as he had three takedowns in a 9-2 decision over freshman Brian Nelson at 157 lbs.

Bloomsburg, a D2 school that wrestles at the D1 level, has three nationally-ranked individuals between 165-285 lbs. and each recorded a win. At 184 lbs., Fiala (Seward) used a takedown late in the first period to grab a 2-0 lead in his 3-2 win over senior Sam Shirey.

Of note, top-ranked Romero Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.) almost sealed the deal at 197 lbs. as he got close to pinning fifth-ranked Chris Perry in the first period. However, Perry rallied from a four point hole to win 8-4.

This marks UNK's sixth dual win over a Division 1 school and the first over a nationally-ranked D1 school
