Rare Shutout for Wrestling

Travis Leiskau
Kearney, Neb. – The 2nd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney used four majors and fall to blank Truman State, 43-0, Friday night in Kirksville, Mo.

The Lopers improve to 13-3 (4-0) while the Bulldogs, an affiliate member of the MIAA in wrestling, drop to 6-6 (1-3).

Both teams rested some key individuals as UNK's Patrick Martinez (4th/174 lbs.) and Truman's Ryan Maus (6th/149 lbs.) each got the night off. Loper senior Brock Coutu, ranked as high as second at 141 lbs. this year, also watched the action.

Recording the 14th shutout in the Marc Bauer era (1999-present) and the first since the 2010-11 season, UNK saw senior heavyweight Kelsey Empting (Ponca City, Okla.) have a first period fall, his third of the season.

At 149 lbs., Kansas junior Tyler Anderson pinned Andrew Still at the 4:41 mark. Next, seniors Mark Fiala (184 lbs.) and Brock Smith (165 lbs.), along with sophomores Connor Bolling (125 lbs.) and Chase White (157 lbs.), each majored their opponent.

Also, Grand Island sophomore Andrew Riedy outscored Mark Smith, 13-10, at 141 lbs. with Texas redshirt freshman Travis Leiskau bumping up to 174 lbs. and posting a 7-3 victory.

Finally, No. 1 ranked Romero Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.) won 9-5 at 197 lbs.
