Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Western State football team had 550 yards of offense and recorded seven sacks to beat Nebraska Kearney 55-0 Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Griffons (6-4, 6-4) have now won six straight over the Lopers (2-8, 2-8) but still trail the all-time series, 16-9.
MWSU scored the first two times they touched the ball to lead 14-0 about five minutes into the game. The drives covered 46 and 59 yards, respectively, with a 49-yard kick return starting the contest.
UNK had a chance to cut into the Griffon lead as they went 40 yards in six plays. However, the Griffons held on 4th and 14 from their 31-yard line.
The drive started after sophomore defensive end
Peyton Lange (Elkhorn) dropped in the flat and made a one handed interception. He returned the pick 26 yards to the Loper 36-yard line.
Western was in position to score again but redshirt freshman safety
George Brown (University City, Mo.) picked off QB Skyler Windmiller at the UNK 24-yard line. That is Brown's team-leading third INT of the season.
The Lopers marched down the field again, thanks to pass completions of 20 yards to redshirt freshman
Tityus Mitchell (Hastings, Fla.) and 34 yards to junior receiver
Dalton Sealey (Hastings). However, on 4th and 8 from the Western nine, junior back
Romero Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.) caught a swing pass and was stopped at the four.
Two plays later, Windmiller threw a 98-yard TD pass to receiver Dee Tolliver. He had a 35-yard scoring reception for the Griffons second TD of the day.
UNK's next drive resulted in three incompletions and then a short punt put Western in good field position. A two play drive ended when back Dominic Thomas raced 32 yards for a score and a 28-0 lead.
Windmiller, a redshirt freshman, finished 16 of 23 for 296 yards, two INTs and two TD's. Eight different Griffons caught a pass, led by Tolliver's two scoring grabs for 133 yards.
On the ground, junior Raphael Spencer had 17 carries for 72 yards pushing him over 1,000 yards for a second straight fall.
Next, Thomas had seven carries for 56 yards with tight end Daylon Harper lining up in the backfield as a fullback and having two one yard scoring plunges.
Western finished with 217 yards and five scores (1, 1, 1, 1 and 32 yards). For good measure, kicker John Schmiemeier had field goals of 35 and 51 yards.
Cotton had a 33 yard run early in the 2nd half and finished with 14 carries for 62 yards to lead UNK. Coming on late, junior back
Kevin Lane (Carson, Calif.) had six carries for 32 yards.
Due to the sacks, for a loss of 32 yards, UNK finished with 92 yards on 39 carries.
Junior QB
Bronson Marsh (Millard South H.S.) was 13 of 26 for 137 yards and one INT. He completed passes to seven teammates, led by junior
Allen Sampson (Tampa, Fla.) who had four receptions for 29 yards.
Defensively, Columbus junior safety
Dillon Loschen had a career-high 17 tackles (six solo) with sophomore ILB
Tyke Kozeal (Sargent) making 11. That allows Kozeal to break his own single season tackle mark of 118, set just last fall. The 2014 co-captain now has 126 stops.
Besides the nifty pick, Lange had eight tackles with senior end
Matt Bowman (Kearney Catholic) having nine.
Next Saturday, Emporia State comes to UNK to close out the 2014 season. The Hornets are 4-6 after losing to NW Missouri State today.
