Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team used three falls and three forfeit wins to easily defeat York College,
46-3, Wednesday night at the Health & Sports Center.
This was the Lopers (1-4) first home dual of the season. York, ranked 20th in the NAIA, drops to 0-5.
UNK tallied 18 team points as they picked up forfeit wins at 125, 174 and 197 lbs. The night started with back-to-back-to-back falls from redshirt freshmen
Hunter Bamford (133 lbs.) and
Keith Surber (141 lbs.) and 7th-ranked
Destin McCauley (149 lbs.).
Next, junior
Devin Aguirre (Ponca City, Okla.) tallied 11 points in the third period to record a 17-7 major decision at 165 lbs., pushing the Loper lead to 28-3.
Finally, redshirt freshmen
Chance Bila (174 lbs.) and
Ivan DeLeon (285 lbs.) won by scores of 4-0 and 3-2, respectively. They each rode out their Panther opponent in the third period to pick up a point.
"For what we endured in Virginia last weekend, this was a chance for our guys to regain some confidence. They went out there and attacked and went after York. That's what I like to see and a good way to rebound," said UNK head coach
Marc Bauer. "We've got the skills and talent but we still have a lot of work to do."
UNK hosts the 2nd Annual Midwest Duals this Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. The Lopers have five duals, starting with a 9:00 a.m. MIAA battle vs. Central Missouri.
