Kearney, Neb. – For a second straight season, the 3rd-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team lost to Tennessee-Chattanooga at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.
After losing to nationally-ranked Bucknell and Old Dominion Friday morning, UNK was put into the "Bronze Round" bracket. The UTC Moccasins fell to West Virginia and Edinboro (Pa.) in their pool Friday morning.
Using four major decisions and a tech fall, UTC beat UNK by a
30-6 score. Last season, the 'Mocs won 24-12 over the Lopers.
South Dakota sophomore
Destin McCauley, ranked 7th in Division II at 149 lbs., got the Lopers on the board with a convincing 14-7 win over Shawn Greevy. He tallied a takedown and three near fall points early in the first period and then tacked on a reversal and two more near fall points in the second period.
For the second time today, junior
Devin Aguirre (Ponca City, Okla.) won at 165 lbs. He racked up five takedowns, riding time and three near fall points to beat Justin Lampe, 16-9.
At 133 lbs., top-ranked
Daniel DeShazer (Wichita, Kans.) almost rallied from a 9-3 third period deficit against 20th-ranked Nick Soto but lost 11-10.
DeShazer managed an escape, takedown and four near fall points in the final minute. However, Soto won on riding time, as well as picking up four points thanks to penalty calls on DeShazer. Two of the penalty points came in third period.
UNK finishes up the weekend with a dual vs. The Citadel (S.C.) Bulldogs Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Central.
