Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
The Lopers are now 3-4-3 (2-1-1) with the Lions at 1-6-3 (0-3-1).
UNK struck first when freshman
Kelsie Ienn (Papillion-LaVista H.S.) tallied her first career goal in the 41st minute. On the play, the Lopers moved the ball away from the LWU goal with senior reserve
Nicole Potthoff (Kearney) finding a wide open Ienn 30 yards out.
She promptly let loose and the ball managed to just get past the leaping hands of Lions keeper Jordan Gnolofo. Eight minutes earlier, sophomore
Carly Brown (Omaha Skutt H.S.) had a similar shot but hers was tipped by Gonolfo and hit the crossbar.
LWU increased the pressure after the break, taking six shots and six corners. They had a shot hit the crossbar in the 55th minute with Loper freshman
Ali Hirschman (Millard South H.S.) making three saves in the first 12 minutes of the half.
The Lions finally got on the board in the 81st minute when its leading scorer on the season, junior Alexis Robbers, got loose in the box and scored after taking a pass from sophomore Kat Roe.
"It's disappointing. We want to win that game as we're at home and ahead with nine minutes left," said UNK head coach
John Maessner. "We just needed to batten down the hatches and finish the game off. We could've defended tougher, gotten to the ball a little bit quicker, clear it out and we go home with a win."
Both goalies made a save in the first overtime period with LWU taking two corners in the second extra period.
Hirschman finished with six saves with senior
Montanna Hosterman (Papillion-LaVista South H.S.) and junior
Kadie Walaszczyk (Houston, Texas) each taking two shots.
"That wasn't a good game for us, especially in the first half. We now have to look in the mirror and figure it out amongst ourselves," said Maessner. "This team is going to do good things. We've already done okay and we have a lot of games left. We're looking forward to playing better and more consistent."
UNK heads to Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State next weekend.
