Kearney, Neb. – The 6th-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team recorded three falls and had two major decisions to roll past Newman,
44-3, Sunday afternoon in Wichita, Kan.
The Lopers get back to the .500 mark (7-7) and are now 3-1 in MIAA duals.
Newman veteran Dustin Reed started the day with a 7-5 win at 125 lbs. That would be the Jets (2-8, 0-3) only win of the dual.
Top-ranked
Daniel DeShazer (133 lbs.) and redshirt freshman
Keith Surber (141 lbs.) each won by forfeit to quickly get Kearney on the board. This was DeShazer's first chance to wrestle in his hometown as a Loper.
Next, junior
Devin Aguirre (165 lbs.) and sophomore
Destin McCauley (149 lbs.) had major decisions with fourth-ranked
Chase White (157 lbs.) almost doing the same, winning 9-2.
Finally, junior
Casey Powell (Catoosa, Okla.) had a pin in just 48 seconds to win at 184 lbs. with top-ranked
Romero Cotton getting his fall late in the first period (2:56) and heavyweight
Ivan DeLeon pinning his Jet opponent at 6:07.
UNK faces NAIA power Oklahoma City and MIAA rival Central Oklahoma next week.
