Late Fall Propels Lopers at 7,700 Feet

JD Rader
Kearney, Neb. – Junior heavyweight Kevin Barrett recorded a late fall and sophomore JD Rader rallied at 133 pounds to help the second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team edge Western State, 24-19, Friday night in Gunnison, Colo.

Wrestling at 7,700 feet, UNK improves to 14-5 while the Mountaineers fall to 6-5.

A 2012 All-American sporting a solid 23-4 record, Barrett (Baltimore, Md.) needed a fall in the night's last match to record a win for the Lopers. Recording a quick takedown, Barrett then pinned Michael Henry at the 51 second mark to secure the dual win. It marks Barrett's 13th pin of the year, by far the most on the Lopers.

Rader (Jewell, Ia.) was replacing a second-ranked Bryce Shoemaker at 133 pounds. Down 4-1 to Tyler Hanenberg in the first period, he used three takedowns and four near fall points in the third period to win 15-11.

Also for UNK, senior and second-ranked Destin McCauley (North Sioux City, S.D.) recorded a first period fall at 157 pounds to tie the dual at 12 all. He had recorded three quick takedowns just prior to his eighth fall of the season.

UNK is at No. 13 Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday night.
