Kearney, Neb. – The 43rd-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos won four singles matches to beat Nebraska-Kearney,
5-3, in an NCAA Central Regional dual Monday evening in Tahlequah, Okla.
The Lopers finish the year at 13-12 with fourth-seeded UCO (14-8) advancing to face 18th-ranked Northeastern State Tuesday morning. The winner advances to the "Sweet 16" on Florida.
In a very rare occurrence, all three doubles matches were decided by a 9-8 score with UNK fortunate enough to win two of them.
Juniors
Amanda Alvarez (Spain) and
Emma Neil (Papillion) rallied past Jenny Bond and Emilie Semo at number three, 9-8 (7-1), to get the Lopers on the board. One spot higher, senior
Sthefani Rodriguez (Venezuela) and sophomore Sherry Sun (China) won a back and forth battle over Shali Schoepflin and Kirstana Bhat, 9-8 (7-4).
Per usual, Neil rolled at number four singles (6-0, 6-2), recording her 18th win of the dual season. However, the 'Chos won four other matches in straight sets to advance. The clinching win came from Bhat at number two (6-1, 6-2).
At number one singles, freshman
Ana Royo (Spain) was battling 38th-ranked Ali Hodges before that match was halted. Royo won the second set, 6-1, while Hodges took the first, 6-2, and was ahead in the third, 3-1.
Rodriguez was UNK's only senior this season. She began her career at Division I Louisiana-Monroe and has been a starter the past three years.
