Defending Champs Blank the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Defending national champion Central Missouri scored two goals in a 13 minute span to down Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Warrensburg.

The Jennies (11-2-1, 5-1-1) improve to 6-0-1 at home while the Lopers fall to 5-9-0 (3-4-0). UCM came into the week among those receiving votes for the Top 25.

Always a talented and deep squad, UCM out shot UNK by a 23-5 margin today. The Jennies also had a 10-3 advantage in corners with its shot total almost even between each half (12 in the first and 11 in the second).

The Loper defense held up for the first 36 minutes with senior keeper Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic H.S.) finishing with six saves. However, senior forward Courtney Killian struck pay dirt for the eighth time this fall when she turned a UNK turnover into a 20-yard goal in the 37th minute. Her shot found the upper right corner.

Bad luck then struck the Lopers five minutes into the second half. Trying to defend a corner, the ball was headed into the back of the net by a Loper for an "own goal".

Offensively, Kearney had one shot on goal and that was taken by Omaha junior Megan Merkel in the 21st minute. It was saved by freshman keeper Lindsey Johnson, a Gretna native. Overall, Omaha senior Caitlin Rerucha had a team-best two shots with her second coming in the 63rd minute. It was blocked by the UCM defense and UNK didn't get another shot off.

After today's results, UNK is now in sole possession of eighth place in the MIAA standings (nine  points). The top eight teams make the MIAA Tournament in two weeks.

The Lopers head to Missouri Southern State and Southwest Baptist next weekend.
