Early Second Half Goal Holds Up

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Maddie Love scored in the 59th minute to lift Nebraska-Kearney over Northwest Missouri State, 1-0, Friday night at Ron & Carol Stadium at Foster Field.

UNK (5-6-0, 3-1-0) wins at home for the second time in 2018 while the Bearcats (1-9-0, 0-4-0) have lost nine in a row.

On a night when the temperatures dropped and the winds kicked up, UNK wad dominant early on. The Lopers had six of its nine shots over the first 45 minutes with two of those coming in the first 4:50. However, Northwest keeper Alexis Castillo-Serna made four first half saves with the other shots going wide of the net. The 'Cats also fought off four UNK corners in the opening half.

Love (Norfolk Catholic) broke the tie after taking a long ball from Papillion junior Kelsie Ienn 15 minutes into the second half. Scoring for the third time this fall, Love first got by a Northwest defender and then beat Castillo-Serna in the box. Love and Omaha Ciera Clark are now tied for the team lead in goals.32572

UNK still had to hang on as Northwest applied some more pressure over the final 30 minutes. Kearney senior keeper Allie Prososki stopped shots in the 66th and 87th minutes while a late Loper turnover almost led to another Bearcats shot in the waning seconds.

Overall, the Lopers out shot Northwest 9-5 and had four more corners, 5-1. Clark and Love both got off two shots with seniors Emily Kosch (Columbus Scotus) and Tori Weber (Lincoln SE) having the other shots on goal.

Prososki saved four saves to win for the fifth time this year and was part of a defense that has now allowed just 12 goals all season. The Lopers also shut out Mary (ND) and have held five other opponents to a single goal.

The Missouri Western State Griffons (7-4-0, 2-2-0) come to town on Sunday. MWSU lost today at Fort Hays State, 2-1.
