Moutaineers Topple Kearney, 18-17

Kearney, Neb. – The ninth-ranked Western State Mountaineers won four late matches to slip past second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 18-17, Saturday night in Gunnison, Colo.

The Lopers (0-2) fell to another former RMAC rival, Colorado Mesa, on Friday night. UNK used about half its expected starting lineup in these duals.

Third-ranked Josh Portillo (Clarion, Ia.) got the night started off with a 13-8 win over veteran Trent Piatt. Portillo had a 4-point near fall in the first period and added another in the second.

UNK moved ahead 14-3 in the dual with three straight victories. Sophomore Wesley Dawkins (Lincoln H.S.) had a point of riding time in a 4-2 decision at 141 pounds, sophomore Jonathan Killingsworth (Lincoln SE) had two takedowns and riding time in a 7-1 decision one class higher with top-ranked Matt Malcolm (Glenwood, Ia.) bouncing back from a Friday loss to have a 15-0 tech fall at 157 pounds.

However, Western won the next three matches by decision and then got a fall at 4:04 at 197 pounds to lead 18-14. This stretch included wins by number one ranked Brandon Supernaw (174 lbs.) and second ranked Konnor Schmidt (197 lbs.).

Nationally-ranked Jarrod Hinrichs (Geneva) was dominant at heavy weight as he had three takedowns and some riding time. But his 10-3 decision over Sammy Deseriere wasn't enough to tie the dual.

Also on Saturday, nine Lopers were in Des Moines for the Grand View University Open. York true freshman Scott Fulsos had two tech falls and an 11-0 major to finish runner up at 141 pounds with Aurora redshirt freshman Jaydon Elge winning four times to be fifth at 157 lbs.

UNK host its annual Holiday Inn Open next Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.
