Rangers Cap Long Day with 11th Inning Win

Kearney, Neb. – Senior designated hitter Zack Dedin hit a walk-off single to center in the bottom of the 11th inning in game two to help the Regis Rangers sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 6-2 and 6-5, Saturday afternoon in Denver.

The Rangers improve to 5-1 while the Lopers drop to 2-5.

A 4:40 second game featured 11 innings and 11 combined runs on 20 hits, four walks and three errors. The teams left just 14 runners (nine for UNK and five for RU) stranded with the Ranger 11th starting with a walk. Cleanup hitter and first baseman Andrew Bryniarski drew the base on balls on a 3-2 pitch.

The 6-4, 215 pound Bryniarski (1 for 4, two runs) moved to second on a passed ball. After Loper reliever Peyton Pocock (Kearney) got a strikeout, Dedin (2 for 4, one run and two RBI's) hit the game winner. In the top of the inning, UNK had runners at the corners with two down but Jake Griffith came in for one batter and promptly got a strikeout.

Regis was poised to win the game in the bottom of the seventh but junior center fielder Brett Young (Lodi, Calif.) threw out preseason All-RMAC shortstop Logan Heflebower at home plate. The 8-2 double play ended the inning. Three innings later, a balk moved Rangers to second and third but junior reliever Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) recorded his third and final strikeout to end the inning.

UNK led 1-0 after 3.5 innings but rallied from deficits of 3-1 and 5-3 to force free baseball. Four Lopers collected two hits including Young (2 for 4) and sophomore first baseman Ty Roseberry (2 for 5, two runs). He led off the fourth with his second homer of the spring. On the mound, Sandoz threw 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, walking none and give up just two hits.

In the early game, Colorado senior Mitchell Robinson (1-1) became the fourth Loper to reach 40 career starts. He suffered the loss by allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a walk over six full innings. Three Loper errors allowed the Rangers to score three unearned runs.

Bryniarski went 2 for 3 with a run while five others had at least one hit. UNK also saw five different players have a hit including Roseberry (1 for 3) and Young (1 for 3, one run).

Kearney faces the UCCS Mountain Lions Sunday at the Air Force Academy. A double header will begin at noon Central.
