UNK Swept in Oklahoma

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team dropped a pair of road double headers this weekend in Oklahoma.

The Lopers fell to Northeastern State, 9-1 and 10-1, on Saturday and to 26th-ranked Central Oklahoma on Friday, 10-2 and 8-4. These were the first MIAA games of the season for the Lopers (4-17).

Northeastern State (12-8, 4-0) recorded 20 hits and scored in all eight innings to win the games on Saturday. A balanced offensive attack was led by junior third baseman Haley Acrey (combined 4 for 6, three runs & three RBI's) and senior first baseman Paige Gann (4 for 5, four runs and one RBI).

In the circle, the RiverHawks got complete games from freshman lefty Gail Young and freshman righty Sydney Balderrama. Both are now 6-3 on the season and combined no walks, eight hits and two earned runs.

Sophomore Alexis Howe (Papillion) led UNK by going 2 for 2 in game two.

The 26th-ranked Bronchos, now 17-7 (7-1) after a sweep of Fort Hays State on Saturday, used four big innings and took advantage of several Loper errors to win both games Friday.

In the weekend opener, senior left fielder Carrie Abrams went 4 for 4 with a run and three RBI's with Oklahoma transfer Jayden Chestnut throwing a complete game five-hitter. She fanned eight and walked just two in improving to 9-3.

A four-run fourth helped UCO erase a 2-1 hole in game two. All-American shortstop Morgan Heard (2 for 4, two runs) and cleanup hitter JoBi Heath (2 for 4, one run & two RBI's) paced the offense with Chestnut closing things out with two hitless innings of relief.

Howe (2 for 4) and sophomore pitcher/first baseman Sara Sempek (2 for 3, one run & three RBI's) led the Lopers. Sempek didn't allow an earned run in 1.1 innings and had a double and triple at the plate. Finally, sophomore Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) took the loss in game but eight of her 10 runs were of the unearned variety.

Kearney hosts Lindenwood (Friday) and Lincoln (Saturday) next weekend at Dryden Park.
