No No and 21 Runs Power Lopers to Two Wins

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Meg Housholder tossed a five-inning no-hitter and the Nebraska-Kearney softball team pounded out 22 hits to take a double header from Lindenwood, 9-0 and 12-3, Friday afternoon in Hays, Kan.

These games were originally set for Kearney's Dryden Park but moved 2.5 hours down the road due to inclement weather. UNK (6-17) is now 2-0 in MIAA play while the Lions fall to 13-11 (2-4 MIAA).

In the opener, Housholder (Parker, Colo.), making her 90th career appearance in the circle, struck out six and walked one. Facing 16 batters, she coaxed the Lions to ground out five times and hit four pop ups. This is UNK's first no-hitter since Becky Dunn (7.0 innings) beat Ouachita Baptist, 3-0, in February 2013.

Now 4-3 on the spring, Housholder capped her big day by belting a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. That was a walk-off bomb due to the eight-run rule. She finished 2 for 2 with the dinger being the fifth of her career.

Also for the Lopers, junior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Fredrick, Colo.) went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer in the third.

Sophomore Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) threw a five-inning four-hitter in the nightcap. Picking up her second win as a Loper, she fanned six, walked three and allowed three singles. At the plate, UNK tallied four in the fourth, three in the first and third innings and two more in the second.

Individually, eight of UNK's starters had a hit with Housholder (2 for 2, two runs & two RBI's) and sophomores Alexis Howe (2 for 3, one run & two RBI's) and Sara Sempek (2 for 3, two runs & one RBI) leading the way. Finally, freshman designated player Karlee Arnold (Parker, Colo.) belted a three-run homer in the third.

Kearney faces the Lincoln Blue Tigers (3-18, 0-7) tomorrow at 12 and 2 p.m.
