Lopers Split Home Opener with Bearcats

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team scored eight runs in bottom of the fourth inning to beat Southwest Baptist in a slugfest, 14-11, Friday evening at Dryden Park.

The Bearcats (12-15, 2-2) took the opener, 4-2. This doubleheader was UNK's first home games of the season as the first four scheduled home contests were weathered out. The Lopers have won five of six to be 9-18 (5-5).

The nightcap featured 25 runs on 28 hits, 14 walks, six errors and four wild pitches. The teams also combined for 21 runners left on base (11 for SBU and 10 for UNK).

The 2.5 hour back and forth affair saw Kearney erase a 7-6 deficit with that big fourth inning. The set started with an SBU error and included eight hits. Among the big blows were back-to-back two-run singles by freshman designated player Karlee Arnold (2 for 5, one run & four RBI's) and senior left fielder Meg Housholder (2 for 2, two runs & two RBI's).

SBU countered with a four spot in its half of the fifth but senior Abbey Martin (Pleasant Grove, Utah) came in and put out the fire. She then picked up the save by throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits along the way.

Finally, freshman Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) earned her first collegiate win by throwing 2.2 innings of middle relief with freshman shortstop and nine hole hitter Kaitlyn Johnson (Kearney) going 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI's.

In game one, SBU's Claire Miller won for the ninth time as she allowed only two hits while fanning 10 and walking three. UNK scored both of its runs in the first inning but didn't threaten after that.

The 'Cats quickly tied things up with a two-run second and then tallied single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Among its six hits was a two-run triple by eight-hole hitter Lauren Strobel.

For UNK, sophomore left fielder Alexis Howe (Papillion-LaVista) went 2 for 3 with a run and RBI while Handrahan threw a scoreless seventh inning.

Weather permitting, the Lopers host Central Missouri on Saturday.
