Long Home Stand Ends with Series Win

Kearney, Neb. – Junior southpaw Josh Cooper was solid in another long relief outing and junior right fielder Alex Achertmann drove in five runs to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Lindenwood, 10-3, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.

With the win, the Lopers (16-11, 9-4) take the series from the Lions (13-14, 6-10) to finish an unprecedented 14-game home stand with a solid 11-3 mark. UNK now has an eight-game road swing, beginning Tuesday at Fort Hays State.

Lindenwood used three hits and an error to score twice in the top of the first. The Lions still had two on with two down when Cooper (Roseville, Calif.) entered the game. While he issued a walk, he also got a ground out to second to get out of the bases loaded jam.

Now 4-0 on the year with a 1.27 ERA, Cooper worked the next seven innings. He fanned two, walked just one more Lion and tossed six straight shutout innings. Besides leading Kearney in wins, Cooper is third in innings (28.1) and strikeouts (26). Finally, all eight of his appearances have come out of the pen.

Offensively, UNK quickly countered with a three spot in its half of the first. Achetermann (Denver, Colo.) had a two-run single to right with freshman catcher Will Olson (Millard West) recording a run scoring single up the middle.

The Lopers then busted things open with a four-run sixth that made the score 9-3. Junior center fielder Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) laced an opposite field double to left to score two and then came home on a single to right center by senior designated hitter Dallas Schramm (Millard North).

Achtermann, finishing 3 for 3 with a run score, blasted his team-leading 10th homer of the year in the third. The shot easily cleared the right center field wall and gives UNK 49 dingers to date. The school record is 73 in 2015 (50 games).

Next, Hernandez went 4 for 5 with four runs and two RBI's from the two-hole. He now has reached base safely in 23 straight games. Achtermann (17) and Olson (15) also have similar streaks going.
