Achtermann Shines as Lopers Blank the Tigers

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Alex Achtermann threw eight shutout innings and pushed his hit steak to 19 straight games to help Nebraska-Kearney blank Fort Hays State, 7-0, Tuesday night in Kansas.

This was the start of an eight-game road trip for the Lopers (17-11, 10-4) who are now in sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings. UNK will face the Tigers (11-19, 3-14) two more times this season; April 11 (Tues.) at home and April 25 (Wed.) back in Hays.

A junior who bats left handed and throws right handed, Achtermann (Denver, Colo.) has done a bit of everything for the Lopers this season. Named the MIAA Hitter of the Week earlier on Tuesday, Achtermann has played right field, third base, first base, designated hitter and made five starts on the mound.

This start was his best as he fanned six, walked one and allowed just three singles and a double in eight full innings of work. Coaxing the Tigers to ground out 12 times, Achtermann threw 105 pitches and is now 3-1 on the year with a 2.66 ERA.

At the plate, the Western Nebraska C.C. transfer hit a leadoff double to center in the sixth. Finishing 1 for 4, Achtermann's current 19-game streak is tied for third longest in the program since 2006. Finally, on the year, Achtermann is at .385 with five doubles, 10 home runs and 35 RBI's.

Not to be outdone, junior center fielder Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) went 3 for 5 tonight. He now has reached base safely in 25 straight games; nly Connor Messinger in 2015 (30 games) has had a longer streak over the last five seasons.

UNK also got great production from nine-hole hitter and shortstop Peter Carlson (3 for 5, one run & three RBI's). He staked the Lopers to a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line. In a six-run eighth, the Colorado native brought home the third run thanks to an infield single.

That big eighth inning featured five Kearney hits, one Hays error, a walk and wild pitch. Redshirt freshman Josh Robinson (Golden, Colo. ), making his second career start in left, singled to right and later came around to score in the eighth. That was his first collegiate hit and he finished 1 for 3 with two runs and one RBI from the eight hole.

Finally, Arlington senior Thomas Ruwe kept the shut out alive by fanning two Tigers in the ninth.

The Lopers remain now head East to face No. 10 Central Missouri Mules (21-7, 12-5) this Thursday-Saturday. The series is moved up one full day due to the Easter Holiday.
