Men Start Homestand with Win

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney men's tennis team began a four-match homestand by sweeping Hastings College, 9-0, Thursday afternoon at Harmon Park.

This was UNK's outside home opener of the spring semester. The Lopers, ranked sixth in the Central Region, improve to 7-2 while the NAIA Broncos fall to 7-3.

In doubles, Kearney allowed just eight combined points. Senior Joey Richards (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshman Alberto Diaz (Spain) ran their record to 8-0 at No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 decision. The pair are ranked sixth in the region.

Next, junior Pepe Balado (Spain), the current men's MIAA Player of the Week, won 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles with Diaz taking his number six singles match by the same score. At number five singles, English junior Johnnie Carmichael is now a team-best 8-1 after a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Zach Inman.

Finally, Richards needed to rally from an 11-10 deficit in a third set tie breaker to get past Tim Fischer at number four singles (6-3, 4-6, 13-11). Richards is ranked 19th in the region with Balado 13th.

UNK hosts Midland (Tuesday), 21st-ranked Washburn (Friday) and Emporia State (Saturday) next week at Harmon Park.
