'Cats Nip the Lopers, 5-4 & 3-2; Friday Morning Games Next

Kearney, Neb. – The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 5-4 and 3-2, Thursday afternoon in Maryville, Mo.

These games were originally set for Saturday but moved up two days due to expected poor weather. With the wins, the Bearcats improve to 23-13 (14-6) while the Lopers fall to 13-26 (9-13). UNK remains in eighth place in the MIAA standings, a half-game ahead of Emporia State.

In game one, senior Meg Housholder (Parker, Colo.) threw a complete game five-hitter but took the loss as Northwest took advantage of two Loper errors to score three unearned runs. Housholder (6-6) fanned six, walked three and allowed four singles.

Second baseman and three-hole hitter Kaitlyn Weis (3 for 3, three runs & two RBI's) did hit a two-run homer in the third and smackED one-out double in the fifth. In that inning, with things knotted at four, a walk and wild pitch moved Weis to third and a teammate to second. After Housholder caught a pop out for the second out, first baseman Abigail Gilson (2 for 3) singled to left to bring home Weis.

UNK managed nine hits over three first three innings but didn't touch Regan Thompson over the final four. She improved to 3-2 by allowing no hits and no walks while fanning two. The only Loper baserunner during this time came as a result of being hit by a pitch.

Overall, senior right fielder Kaela Samek (Lincoln Pius), sophomore center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.) and freshman catcher Karlee Arnold (Parker, Colo.) each had two hits with freshman second baseman Kaylee Schutte (Elkhorn South) having a two-run single in the first.

In the nightcap, the game was again tied in the fifth when the 'Cats moved ahead for good. A single to left, followed by back-to-back bunt singles, loaded the bases with no outs. A sac fly brought home one and then, after a steal and another walk, a ground out to short made it 3-1.

Outhitting Northwest by a 10-6 margin, UNK did rally a bit in the seventh. Ray (2 for 4) singled to left, took second on a ground out and then scored thanks to a double to right center by junior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (3 for 4).

However, pinch runner Lauren Struebing (Kearney H.S.) was stranded as Holly Posegate got a foul out to first to end the game and earn the save. Before the final pout, Posegate plunked sophomore Sara Sempek (1 for 3, one RBI.) to put the potential go-ahead run on base.

Junior Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) took the loss despite tossing a complete game six-hitter. She allowed three earned on a hit batter, two walks and six singles. Northwest saw sophomore Rachel Smith improve to 11-4 by fanning five and giving up a run in five full innings.

UNK is at Missouri Western State on Friday. That double header has been moved up to a 9 a.m. start.
