Two-Hit Shutout by Cooper, Six HR's Equal Sweep in Tahlequah

Kearney, Neb. – Junior left hander Josh Cooper tossed a complete game two-hit shutout in game two and Nebraska-Kearney hit three home runs in the ninth inning of game one to sweep a doubleheader from Northeastern State, 12-9 and 5-0, Friday evening in Tahlequah, Okla.

Due to expected rain this weekend in Northeast Oklahoma, the teams played two today and have scheduled a 9 a.m. game for Saturday. If the series finale cannot be played tomorrow it'll be bumped to Sunday at a time to be determined.

UNK (24-18, 17-11) ended a three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion by tallying eight runs in its final two at-bats to rally past the

Josh Cooper now has a team-high six W's
RiverHawks (23-18, 14-14) in game one. Down 8-4, the Lopers saw junior center fielder and leadoff hitter Brett Young (Lodi, Calif.) belt a three-run shot, his ninth of the year, with two down in the eighth.

However, NSU tallied an unearned run in its half of the eighth to seemingly add a key insurance run. But senior catcher Dallas Schramm (2 for 5, two runs) hit a solo shot with one out in the ninth and then, after a single, senior second baseman Scott Platt (2 for 5, two runs) smacked a two-run shot to left. For good measure, redshirt freshman shortstop Peter Carlson (Arvada, Colo.) belted a two-run homer soon after to finish the scoring.

UNK managed 17 hits with the seven through nine hitters – Platt, Carlson and sophomore third baseman Calvin Rudolph (Millard South) – going a combined 7 for 15 with six runs and seven RBI's. Coming off the disabled list, Rudolph went 4 for 5 and belted his first homer, in his 205th career at-bat, in the second. That was part of a four run inning and helped UNK erase a 2-0 deficit.

On the mound, junior closer Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) worked around two singles in the bottom of the ninth to record his seventh save. Junior lefty Jeremy Moyer (Prescott, Ariz.) earned his first win in the Blue & Gold by striking out four in two full innings.

Northeastern was led by shortstop Erick Espinosa (5 for 6, two runs & one RBI) and starting pitcher Dustin Berrong (7.0 innings, nine K's, four runs).

In the nightcap, Cooper (Roseville, Calif.) had one of the best pitching performances by a Loper over the past 20 years as he no hit the 'Hawks for five innings. Fanning nine and walking just three, he threw 121 pitches and gave up only a leadoff hits in the sixth (single) and ninth (double) innings.

Over the last 14 years, this is UNK's fourth nine inning complete game shutout. The others were done by Jared Loschen (2003/Regis), Seth Svoboda (2007/Colorado Christian) and Mike Loeske (2012/Metro State). Cooper is now 6-2 with a 2.36 ERA. The six wins lead the team with the ERA being the second lowest next to Sandoz's 1.54.

Offensively, Schramm continued a recent hot streak by going 2 for 5 with a run scored and five RBI's. He had a two-run single in the first and a three-run double in the seventh. Schramm now has 164 career RBI's, seventh most in Loper lore. He also has 36 career homers after that first game solo shot, three off the school mark held by Tom Bales ('88).

Next, batting in front of Schramm, junior right fielder Alex Achtermann (Denver) went 2 for 4 with two runs and two-run dinger in the second. He has 15 long balls on the season, four off the school record set by Bales in 1988.

As a team, Kearney has 81 home runs to date, tops in Division II. The Lopers entered the week leading D2 in homers, homers per game and double per game. UNK's current double total of 127 is 12 shy of tying the record set by the 2008 squad
