Hallman Gem Leads to Split at Patriot

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Erin Hallman tossed complete game five-hit shut out to help Nebraska-Kearney salvage the second game of a double header with Emporia State, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at Patriot Park.

The Hornets tallied six unearned runs to win the opener, 7-5. UNK is now 13-24 (9-11) and in sole possession of eighth place in the MIAA standings.

Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) is now 5-10 after having her best effort of the season. Over 91 pitches, she fanned six, didn't walk a Hornet, and allowed just three singles and two doubles. Finally, Hallman coaxed Emporia to ground out 14 times.

Offensively, UNK was limited by ESU's Montana Mesler (7-10). The freshman right hander also went the distance, tossing a seven-hitter. However, she was tagged for two earned runs in the fifth.

With two down and a runner at first, sophomore center fielder Alexis Ray (2 for 3) laced a triple to right center. That marked her fifth triple of the season and proved to be the game winning hit. She later scored on a bloop single to right by sophomore left fielder Alexis Howe (2 for 3). Since 2000, Ray (Platt City, Mo.) joins fellow outfielders Whitney Frederick in 2012 (five) and Alissa Larsen in 2008 (five) as the only Lopers to tally five triples in a single season.

Emporia did have one on with one out in the top of the seventh but Hallman got a ground out and strikeout to cap the day.

In game one, an odd bounce in the first got the Hornets (15-26, 6-11) going. Back-to-back singles and a throwing error on a bunt attempt loaded the bases with no outs. A hard grounder to the left side of the infield plunked the base runner going from second to third. Instead of being ruled out, that Hornet was able to reach third and everyone else was ruled safe. A few batters later, pitcher Kelsey Phillips (3-9) helped her own cause by lacing a two-run triple to right.

Phillips did the rest, working around 10 hits by fanning four and walking none. UNK did tally one in the seventh and had the potential tying run at second with two down. However, Phillips got a strikeout to end the threat and game.

Ray and Howe (Papillion-LaVista) both went 2 for 4 with Colorado senior Meg Housholder allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. Freshman Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) took the loss but didn't gave up an earned run in her one inning.

UNK is at Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western State next weekend.
