Lopers Tame the Lions; Huge Matches Saturday vs. SBU in G.I.

Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney upset two nationally-ranked doubles teams and welcomed back nationally-ranked Ana Royo in a sweep of Lindenwood, 7-2 (men) and 6-3 (women), Friday in Grand Island.

This dual was originally set for Harmon Park in Kearney but moved indoors due to the weather. Tomorrow's battle with Southwest Baptist (No.14 men; No. 12 women) will also be in G.I. First serve is at noon with the MIAA men's regular season title on the line as both SBU and UNK are 4-0 in league action.

To move to 14-3, the 22nd Lopers swept doubles and three through six singles this evening. With the setback, the LWU Lions fall to 6-8 (0-4).

At number one doubles, junior Pepe Balado (Spain) and freshman Sri Aakash Reddiyar (Malaysia) upset the 33rd-ranked tandem of Jonas Bergbom and Naofal El Idrissi. UNK then allowed just three combined points in the other two matches.

Kearney then managed three straight set victories in singles. Freshman Dias Meiirbek (Kazakhstan) pushed his winning streak to five in a row with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number four with junior Johnnie Carmichael (England) now a team-best 15-2 thanks to a 6-2, 6-2 score at the third spot in the order. Finally, freshman Alberto Diaz (Spain) capped the dual at number six with a 6-2, 6-1 score.

On the women's side, UNK is now 15-5 (5-3) while LWU drops to 3-9 (2-4). The Lopers came in ranked seventh in the Central Region; only six teams make the NCAA Tournament this spring.

Just like in the men's dual, Kearney pulled the upset at number one doubles. Senior Amanda Alvarez (Spain) and freshman Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) bested a Lion tandem ranked 47th in Division II by a 8-4 score.

Two spots lower, senior Emma Neil (Papillion) and Royo (Spain) won by an 8-3 count. The pair is regionally-ranked but hasn't played since Royo was injured back on February 3rd. She is ranked 35th nationally in singles.

In singles, Turarbek rolled at number one (6-3, 6-2) as did Alvarez at number three (6-3, 6-0). Alvarez now has the second most duals wins (12) on the team with Turarbek having notched three wins while filling in for Royo at number one.

Finally, freshman Claire Neil (Papillion) improved to 9-3 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at number five.
