Quick Strike Jets Spoil Home Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The Newman University (Kan.) Jets struck for two goals early in the second half to down Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

This was the season opener for both squads with the game also part of the "UNK Fall Classic." Concordia-St. Paul downed Western (Colo.) State, 1-0, to start the day.

Currently a member of the soon-to-be-defunct Heartland Conference, the Jets from Wichita tallied goals in the 45th and 49th minutes to record the win. NU will join the MIAA next season and is coming off an 11-6-2 campaign.31949

Newman out shot the Lopers 5-1 over the first 45 minutes but UNK doubled up that stat in the second half, 10-5. However, the Jets made their shots count as senior Gracie Linton and junior Vanessa Ortiz scored.

Having eight goals last fall, Linton recorded her first of 2017 by taking a pass and taping the ball in from inside the kill box. Just four minutes later, Ortiz found the far right post from 15 yards out.

True freshman keeper Jackie Lari made her collegiate debut a memorable one as she made six saves over 90 minutes. She stopped a shot by redshirt freshman Kassidy Kirsch (Rapid City, S.D.) in the 87th minute as well as two shots 10 minutes earlier. Those potential goals were taken by senior Tori Weber (Lincoln SE) and junior Maddie Love (Norfolk Catholic).

Love, Weber and junior Megan Merkel (Millard West) each got two shots off with Weber's both being on goal. Defensively, senior Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) played the first half in goal with junior Emily Thuss (Raymore, Mo.) working the final 45. They combined for two saves.

UNK plays Concordia Sunday at 11 with the Jets facing the Mountaineers at two.
