Golden Bears Win a Rare Morning Affair

Kearney, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears tallied goals in the 30th and 50th minutes to rally past Nebraska-Kearney, 2-1, Sunday morning at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

This was day two of the UNK Fall Classic. Due to expected storms in the area UNK (0-2) and CU (2-0) started at 9:30 a.m., two hours earlier than originally planned. Newman (2-0) then downed Western State Colorado (0-2), 2-0, in the afternoon.

The Lopers scored for the first time in 2018 when junior Molly Willis (Kearney H.S.) lined up for a free kick about in the middle of the field and about 40 yards from the CU goal. Her perfectly placed ball nicked off junior Maddie Love (Norfolk Catholic) and past keeper Jordyn Clark for a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the action.

However, the Golden Bears had multiple scoring chances in the kill box and eventually cashed in when senior Katri Gifford took a cross from freshman Jena Berkland and tied the game from a few yards out at 30:39.

Out shooting UNK 9-2 overall, Concordia took the lead for good five minutes into the second half when Berkland took a pass from junior Leah Johnson and scored from inside the kill box.

Besides Love, senior Kelsie Ienn (Papillion-LaVista) got a shot off for UNK with a leaping Tori Weber (Lincoln SE) close to deflecting in a cross in the second half. Defensively, senior keeper Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) made five saves.

Kearney leaves Tuesday for a long road trip to Montana. The Lopers will take part in the annual "Rimrock Classic", a men's and women's tournament hosted by Montana State-Billings. UNK will play Thursday (MSU-B) and Saturday (U. of Mary).
