Set Piece Goal Powers Washburn

Kearney Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods scored off a corner kick in the 10th minute and defended nine corners to down Nebraska-Kearney, 1-0, Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The Lopers (2-3-0) see a modest two-game winning streak come to an end while Washburn improves to 3-2-0. This was the first of three non-conference games against MIAA opponents for UNK; they are at Fort Hays State Sunday and Emporia State next Friday.

Falling to 2-7-3 all-time against Washburn, Kearney had a 9-2 advantage in corners while also getting off three shots in each half. The 'Bods managed four shots in each half and struck pay dirt just 10 minutes into the action.

Sophomore Tera Lynch lined up for a corner and her long ball hit off teammate Mattie Miano in the box. Keeper Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) was moving towards Milano when the ball went to the other side and found senior Paige Swanson who headed in the loose ball for the lone goal.

"We need to look at the game film to see exactly what happened there. We tried to set a standard to not allow goals off set plays," said Loper head coach Chloe Roberts. "We need to clear the ball and have communication back there. That can't happen."

UNK had seven of its corners over the first 45 minutes but none resulted in a goal. Junior Molly Willis (Kearney H.S.) had a chance in the seventh minute but her attempt went high.

"At the start of the game we had a shot in the six-yard box … we have to put that away. Soccer is a cruel game; we miss that and they go to the other end and score off a set play," said Roberts.

The first half came to a screeching halt in the 33rd minute when UNK junior Maddie Love (Norfolk Catholic) collided with WU keeper Riley Trent. While Love walked off the field, Trent had to be carded off and left via ambulance. Her status is unknown at this time.

"I think we battled and, overall, I thought we outplayed them in my eyes. We connected passes and played some great soccer but we just didn't shoot enough. We didn't challenge the backup keeper and test her enough," said Roberts. "I hope everything is okay with (Trent) and we wish her a speedy recovery."

UNK had two late chances to send the game into overtime but shots by senior Tori Weber (Lincoln SE) and Willis either went high or were saved by backup keeper Bailee Russell. UNK also used a second keeper as junior Emily Thuss (Raymore, Mo.) went the final 45 minutes and stopped one shot.

"Moving forward we have to create more chances for shot opportunities and hopefully that will happen," said Roberts. "Sometime the ball doesn't bounce your way."

Omaha junior Megan Merkel led UNK with three shots with Willis having two. Finally, three Lopers went all 90 minutes including Papillion senior Kelsie Ienn.

The Tigers (1-2-2) and Hornets battled to a 1-1 tonight in Hays. The game Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
