Kearney, Neb. – Senior midfielder Shelby Keyes scored in the 66th minute and Emporia State took 26 shots to down Nebraska-Kearney, 1-0, Friday evening in Kansas.

This was the final non-conference game for both teams in 2018. The Hornets improve to 5-1-1 while the Lopers fall to 2-5-0.

Losing 1-0 for a third straight game, UNK got six saves from senior keeper Ali Hirschman (Millard South) in the second half to hang around. Emporia managed 13 shots in each half with the Lopers have six in the second and three in the first.

Junior Tanna Benefiel squared up in the 66th minute and saw her shot blocked by the Kearney defense. However, the rebound went to Keyes who punched in the loose ball from five yards out. This marks her second goal of the fall.

UNK tried to quickly respond as Kansas sophomore midfielder Alex Dayton saw her shot in the 67th minute saved by Hornet keeper Jillian Patton. The Lopers then had shots sail wide or high in the 76th and 84th minutes as Patton recorded her third shutout of the year.

Taking two corner kicks, UNK saw South Dakota redshirt freshman Kassidy Kirsch and Norfolk junior Maddie Love get off two shots apiece. Emporia saw Benefiel (five), Keyes and true freshman Aislinn Hughes (both four) combine for 13 shots.

The Lopers start MIAA play Sunday afternoon at Washburn (4-3-0). The Ichabods downed Fort Hays State, 3-1, tonight in Topeka.
