Two First Half Goals Lead to Win in Topeka

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Alex Dayton scored in the 32nd minute and junior Maddie Love added an insurance goal soon after to lift Nebraska-Kearney to a 2-1 win at Washburn Sunday afternoon.

This was the MIAA opener for both teams. With today's effort UNK (3-5-0) avenges a 1-0 loss to the Ichabods (4-4-0) last Friday at Cope Stadium. The Lopers also move to 2-2-0 in true road games; the school-record for road wins in a season is four (2012). Finally, UNK beats Washburn for the first time since October 2014.

Dayton (Olathe, Kan.) ended almost a 400 minute scoreless drought for UNK when she banged one home from 20 yards out 10 minutes before halftime. This is her second career goal and first game winner.

Just four minutes later Love (Norfolk Catholic) struck pay dirt after taking a pass from redshirt freshman Kassidy Kirsch (Rapid City, S.D.). Love now has a team-best two goals this year and three for her career.

Both teams ended with 12 shots while UNK had a slight edge, 4-2, in corners. The 'Bods managed nine shots after the break but didn't find the back of the net until senior Cassidy Meadows headed in a free kick in the 85th minute. Senior keeper Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) stopped a shot three minutes earlier and a last second shot, after a free kick, sailed well wide left for Washburn.

Dayton and Love both had three shots to pace Kearney's offensive. Next, Kirsch and Colorado senior Michaela Hoffman got two shots off with Omaha senior Caitlin Rerucha having a shot on goal. Finally, Prososki made four saves.

Washburn was led by sophomore Tera Lynch who had three shots, one on goal.

UNK hosts Northeastern State (6-2, 0-1) and Central Oklahoma (8-0, 1-0) next weekend.
