Hinrichs Tech Fall Lifts Lopers over the Lions, 20-19

Kearney, Neb. – Junior heavyweight Jarrod Hinrichs recorded a late technical fall to help second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney slip past sixth-ranked Lindenwood, 20-19, Saturday afternoon at Buffalo County Fairgrounds.

This was the Lopers (8-4, 1-0) only dual of the day; Truman State from Missouri couldn't make the trip due to weather. The Lions (10-3, 2-1) started Saturday with a 23-18 victory over No. 7 Colorado-State Pueblo and then whipped Colorado School of Mines, 32-6, in the last round.

In a back and forth dual that saw several matches come down to the wire, Lindenwood grabbed a 19-15 lead after ninth-ranked Colton Clingenpool had a 13-5 major at 184 pounds and junior Jared McKindley used a takedown midway through the first sudden victory period to edge Gretna senior Brady Radik, 4-2, at 197 pounds. 34321

Needing a fall or tech fall at heavyweight in order to win and take a big step at the 2019 MIAA title, UNK saw Hinrichs (Geneva) jump out to period leads of 5-3 and 15-6 over No. 12 Courvosier Morrow. His day had started with a 7-3 upset of fourth-ranked Gavin Nye of CSU-Pueblo.

Hinrichs, now 24-6 on the year, continued to take down Morrow but a major decision wouldn't be enough as the Lions had the tiebreaker in case of a 19-all tie.  With around 17 seconds left, Hinrichs recorded his final two points and then fought off a shot by Morrow. Nearly three minutes of riding time was the deciding factor in a 23-8 pasting.

Another huge team point was tallied by top-ranked Matt Malcom (Glenwood, Ia.) at 157 pounds. Now on a 10-match winning streak, Malcom scored seven third period points to beat Nate Trepanier, 10-2, by major decision. At 141 pounds, ninth-ranked Jonathan Killingsworth (Lincoln SE) controlled Danny Swan, who was moving up a class, for most of the seven minutes. Down 4-2, Swan almost recorded a late takedown. Instead, Killingsworth fought it off and won 4-3 as Swan had just over a minute of riding time.

Lindenwood grabbed a 9-0 lead as fershman Tanner Hitchcock pinned sophomore Wesley Dawkins (Lincoln H.S.) with a second left at 133 pounds. Dawkins dominated the match, having a 6-1 lead and almost three minutes of riding time but a late front headlock by Hitchcock literally flipped the result. To start the dual, third-ranked Carlos Jacquez had three takedowns to beat second-ranked Josh Portillo (Clarion, Ia.) by a 7-2 margin.

UNK is now off until Tuesday, January 29th, when it hosts the Central Missouri Mules.
