Freshman Scores Late, Merkel Ties Record in 1-1 Draw

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Cammie Davis scored in the 87th minute and senior Allie Prososki made eight saves to help Nebraska-Kearney tie Northwest Missouri State, 1-1, Friday afternoon in Maryville.

With the result the Lopers (1-6-4, 0-2-2) pick up a second conference point and are now 3-2-3 all-time against the Bearcats (3-6-2, 1-2-1).

The teams combined for 41 shots, 10 fouls and five corners over the 110 minutes. UNK out shot Northwest in regulation, 19-15, with the 'Cats having the advantage in extra time, 6-1.

In the 29th minute Northwest junior Manuela Gonzalez took a pass from sophomore Tanith Beal and went to the low left side of the net for her second goal of 2019. UNK tried to tie things up before the break but 'Cat keeper Alexis Serna Castillo stopped a shot by senior Molly Willis (Kearney H.S.) with another attempt by junior Alex Dayton (Olathe, Kan.) going wide 14 seconds later.

With time winding down in regulation Northwest set up for a corner. Prososki blocked the shot in the 86th minute and then UNK countered. Davis (Wichita, Kan.) became the first freshmen to score in 2019 as she went low and to the left at 87:40.

Kearney's lone shot in either OT period came by senior Megan Merkel (Millard West) and it was wide in the 98th minute. Prososki (Kearney Catholic) made her eighth and final save in the 107th minute on a shot taken by senior Izzy Romano.

Merkel once again was UNK's leader in shots, this time at eight which ties the school record. Lefty Raliegh Mercer reached that total in a 2011 game vs. Adams (Colo.) State with Becka Talcott taking eight shots in a 2010 contest against Colorado Christian.

Next, Willis, Davis, Dayton and freshman Hannah Hardy (Kearney H.S.) all had two shots. Finally Northwest saw freshman Kaylie Rock have a team-best five shots.

UNK heads to Missouri Western State on Sunday.
