Week 8 Preview: Final Fri./Sat./Tues. Home Swing

Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team has another three matches in a five-day span when it travels to Central Oklahoma and Newman this weekend before hosting NAIA Sterling (Kan.) College Tuesday night. 36376

The Lopers (21-0, 12-0) have had four straight home Tuesday night matches and the battle with the SC Warriors caps this rare stretch. It'll be "Halloween with the Lopers" that evening with a variety of events taking place. Check the volleyball schedule page for all match times and media links.

Earlier this year at home UNK swept both UCO (-15, -10, -11) and MIAA-newcomer Newman (-15, -17, -16). The Bronchos have since swept No. 14 Northwest Missouri State in Edmond but are coming off a four-set loss Tuesday night at Pittsburg State. UNK is 16-4 all-time vs. UCO and has won three straight in the series.

The Jets (0-21, 0-12) are still searching for their first win of 2019. They took a set from Missouri Southern State Tuesday night in Joplin and have three five-set losses to date. The Lopers are a 10-0 all-time vs. NU.

Sterling, from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), is 12-17 to date with a road match at McPherson (Kan.) College this weekend. Kearney is 2-0 all-time vs. the Warriors with the last meeting coming in 1990.

UNK enters the weekend third in NCAA Division II in digs per set (20.3), trailing only North Carolina's Mars Hill College (21.5) and rival Chadron State (20.4). Six different Lopers average 2.00 digs per set with the team chasing the school record for a season (21.1) which was set by the 2012 squad. The current average would rank second best in Loper lore.

Allowing the opposition to hit just .107, UNK has hit above .200 on the past seven matches. Four players are hitting at least .300 including Gretna freshman outside Kamryn Schuler (.349) and Kearney junior middle Anna Squiers (.327). The team's high water mark in MIAA play came against rival Fort Hays State (.315).

UNK returns home next weekend to face Northwest and No. 10 Central Missouri.
