Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team won five singles matches to down the Rockhurst Hawks, 5-2, Friday afternoon in Grand Island.

This was the Lopers (6-0) opening dual of the spring while this was RU's first dual of the 2018-19 season.

UNK found itself down 1-0 after doubles as Rockhurst won 6-4 at number one and 7-5 in the second spot. Sophomores Lili Fattig (Lexington) and Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) took the other doubles match, 6-4.

Senior Sherry Sun (China) and freshman Vasilisa Polunova (Russia) won in straight sets at number three and number one singles, respectively, to put the Lopers ahead for good. Polunova notched her third singles win in duals thanks to taking her first set 7-6 (11-9). She then rolled in the second, 6-0.

Next, Turarabek took her number two singles match in straight sets with Lincoln freshman Fidan Ibrahimova recording the clinching point thanks to a rally at number four, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. She is now a team-best 6-0 in dual singles matches.

UNK has two matches Sunday in Grand Island, facing the Augustana Vikings in the morning and the Hastings Broncos in the afternoon.
