Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team swept Hastings College and lost to Augustana University Sunday at the Grand Island Tennis Center.

This was the opening weekend of UNK's spring season and the Lopers are now 7-1.

Kearney, ranked seventh in the latest ITA Central Region rankings, faced an Augie squad that came in fifth in the Central. The soon-to-be Division I Vikings (2-0) took the doubles point and then won a series of close singles matches to win 7-0.

Sophomore Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) fell by a 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 score to Laura Arce Vieyra at number two singles with senior Sherry Sun (China) losing 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7) at number three. UNK finally won a tie breaking set but freshman Fidan Ibrahimova (Lincoln SE) still fell to Grace Goble at number four, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (7-3), 6-2.

The Lopers easily rebounded in the afternoon by blasting the Broncos (1-3). UNK, after winning the doubles point, lost just seven sets in sweeping the six singles matches. Winning by 6-0, 6-0 scores was sophomore Claire Neil (Papillion) at number four singles and sophomore Lili Fattig (Lexington) at number six. Finally, Turarbek and Sun won by 6-1, 6-0 scores.

UNK heads to Springfield, Mo, next weekend to face the Harding (Ark.) Bison and Drury (Mo.) Panthers.
