Bison and Panthers Slip Past the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team dropped a pair of close matches to the Harding Bison and Drury Panthers this weekend in Springfield, Mo.

The Lopers, ranked seventh in the Central Region, are now 7-3 on the season.

On Saturday against HU, ranked fourth in the Central, UNK lost the doubles point when the number team of Rylie Cox and Lindy Carpenter won 6-3. The Bison then secured the dual, 5-2, as they won three singles matches in three sets.

Cox, ranked 48th nationally, got past freshman Vasilisa Polunova (6-3, 1-6, 6-2) in the top spot with sophomore Zhanel Turarbek falling to Arisa Takanashi at number two, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Lincoln freshman Fidan Inbrahimova won at number four (2-6, 6-3, 6-1) but Harding's Emily Carpenter squeaked out a win over sophomore Claire Neil (Papillion) at number five (3-6, 6-2, 7-6; 7-5).

Against the host Panthers, ranked fifth in the Midwest Region, UNK lost the doubles point as the top team of Polunova and Turarbek were edged 7-5 in the deciding match. Polunova bounced back to win her number one singles match over Yu-Ling Lee (7-6, 2-6, 6-4) but Drury swept two through four singles to win 4-3.

UNK is now off until February 28th when they head to Arkansas for two matches.
