Lopers Rally Past the Rangers, 13-9

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to rally past Wisconsin-Parkside, 13-9, Sunday afternoon in Russellville, Ark.

The schedule for the Lopers (1-7) changed this weekend due to inclement weather. Instead of competing in the annual 8-State Classic in Bentonville, UNK went a few hours South in Arkansas to play two games Saturday and Sunday. The first three games were held in Conway with the tilt vs. UWP coming in Russellville, home of Arkansas Tech.

Kearney fell to Central Missouri, 6-4, and Rogers State, 12-11 (9 innings), on Saturday with Washburn taking a non-conference game on Sunday morning, 13-2 (5 innings).

UNK trailed the Parkside Rangers 8-0 after three complete but scored 13 of the next 14 runs to pick up the win. Lincoln freshman and leadoff hitter Carlee Liesch (2 for 5, three runs) started the comeback with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth. That was her first collegiate dinger.

The big knocks kept coming as the Lopers erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth. A couple of UWP errors opened the flood gates with Papillion junior catcher Alexis Howe (3 for 4, five RBI's) taking advantage by belting a one-out "Grand Slam". For good measure senior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.) followed with a solo dinger, her first of the year.

Seven straight Lopers reached safely in the sixth to complete the comeback. The big blows were a two-run single by junior shortstop Kaitlyn Johnson (Kearney H.S.) and a two-run double by junior double from center fielder Lex Ray (Platte City, Mo.).

Missouri sophomore Sarah Handrahan earned the win by allowing two earned in four innings of relief. Finally, Colorado junior Erin Hallman notched a rare save by throwing the final two innings, both scoreless sets.

Defending MIAA champs, Washburn erupted for seven runs in the top of the first and tallied five more in the fifth to take Sunday's first game. Ray finished 2 for 3 with an RBI to pace the Lopers.

UNK suffered a pair of heartbreaking defeats on Saturday as UCM scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up a 6-4 win. That marked the Lopers fourth straight loss by two or less runs.

Liesch, Colorado sophomore catcher Karlee Arnold and Omaha sophomore second baseman Karlee Arnold each collected two hits as UNK tallied two runs in both the first and fifth innings.

The game against Rogers, a future MIAA rival, featured a combined 23 runs on 20 hits, 15 walks and five errors. The Hillcats tied things up at 10 in the bottom of the eighth and then scored twice in the ninth to record the wild win.

Liesch (2 for 4, two runs), Hamilton (2 for 4, two RBI's), Johnson (2 for 5, four RBI's) and Papillion junior first baseman Sara Sempek (3 for 5, four runs) paced the Lopers. RSU won thanks to its first three hitters going a combined 7 for 14 with eight RBI's and four runs.

UNK was supposed to play six games over three days next weekend at a tournament in Emporia, Kan. However, weather has already canceled that event so the Lopers are "TBA" for the time being.
