UNK Falls to Hornets & 'Bods on the Road

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team fell to No. 24 Washburn, 6-1, and Emporia State, 4-3, this weekend in Kansas and Missouri.

The Lopers are now 8-7 (0-2 MIAA) while the Ichabods improve to 8-1 (2-0) and the E-State Hornets to 4-1 (2-0).

One of four nationally ranked MIAA squads, Washburn allowed 10 combined points in doubles to move ahead 1-0 in the dual. The 'Bods won in straight sets between number two and five singles with Madison Lysaught rallying past Papillion sophomore Claire Neil at number six (6-1, 1-6, 10-8) to record her team's final point.

Russian freshman Vasilisa Polunova tallied the lone point for the Lopers thanks to a three set win in the top spot in the lineup (7-6, 5-7, 6-4).

On Saturday in Kansas City, Emporia staged an epic comeback at number three doubles to pick up a very key point. The pair of Silvana Caceres and Shannen Meyer fought off seven match points to win 7-6 (8) and thus give the doubles point to the Hornets.

UNK bounced back to take three of the first five singles matches before E-State swept at number two and won in three sets at number five (6-7, 6-1, 6-1). Cyrielle Peyroche then secured the dual for Emporia with a comeback from the fourth spot in the order (3-6, 6-2, 6-2).

Polunova led the Lopers once again, winning at number one and two doubles. She has a team-best nine singles wins and six in doubles.

Kearney heads to South Carolina next weekend and will have four duals including one against Division I member La Salle (Pa.).
