No Saint Patrick's Luck in Great Bend; Two More Monday

Kearney, Neb. – Pittsburg State freshman right hander Shelby Smith had two strong outings in the circle to help Pittsburg State squeak by Nebraska-Kearney, 3-0 and 4-3 (10 innings), in an MIAA double header Sunday afternoon in Great Bend, Kan.

This was UNK's first league games of the season and slated home openers. Due to weather and field conditions in Kearney, the games were moved about three hours south to Barton Community College and pushed back two full days. The Lopers will remain in town and face Missouri Southern State (8-9, 1-3) on Monday afternoon.

Even on St. Patrick's Day UNK couldn't find any gold at the end of the rainbow. The Lopers fall to 0-4 in extra-inning games, 0-6 in one-run games and have dropped nine contests by a total of 13 runs.

UNK (2-12) was six outs from taking the second game after senior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (2 for 4) hit an opposite field two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the fifth. That made it 3-2 but the Gorillas (13-12, 3-1) quickly tied things up in its half of the sixth thanks to a leadoff double and single.

Redshirt freshman Mo Vornhagen (Kearney H.S.) came in of relief of starter Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) and worked some magic to get out of bases loaded jams in the sixth and seventh innings. All toll the lefty struck out five and worked around seven walks to allow no runs in four innings of work.

Both teams struggled with runners in scoring position, Pitt stranding 11 and UNK 10. The Lopers had the go-ahead run at third with two down in the seventh but Smith got a ground out to end the rally. She then retired the final nine batters she faced to improve to 6-6. Smith went the final 5.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk with five K's.

With the international tie breaking rule taking effect in the top of the 10th (runner starts at second base), Pitt won when that runner scored on a two-out throwing error. The Lopers saw just three pitches in the bottom of the 10th to suddenly end the 2:15 game.

Besides Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.), junior first baseman Sara Sempek (Papillion) went 2 for 4 with an RBI and freshman right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius) remained red hot by going 2 for 5 with a run.

Designated player Alicia Lowery hit a home run and led the Pitt offense by going 2 for 4 with three RBI's.

In game one, Smith threw 4.2 scoreless innings to win for the fifth time. Junior right hander Halle Brin picked up her third save by tossing 2.1 scoreless innings as UNK finished with four hits.

Colorado junior Erin Hallman was the tough luck loser as she allowed one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Fanning five and walking five, she gave way to Handrahan who managed 1.2 scoreless innings.

All the runs came in the fifth thanks to two hits, two walks, Loper error and sac fly. Eight-hole hitter Brittanee Knepper (2 for 3, one run) led Pitt with freshman left fielder Jasmyn Broussard (2 for 3) leading UNK at the dish.

The MSSU Lions dropped to 8-9 (1-3) after being swept at Fort Hays State today, 8-4 and 4-2.
