RiverHawks Edge UNK in G.I.

Kearney, Neb. – The Northeastern State RiverHawks won four singles matches to slip past Nebraska-Kearney, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Grand Island.

The defending MIAA Champions improve to 3-6 (1-1) while the Lopers fall to 11-10 (0-4). UNK has now suffered four 4-3 setbacks this spring.

Looking to knock off NSU for the first time, UNK won the doubles point thanks to wins at the number two and three spots. Senior Sherry Sun (China) and freshman Fidan Ibrahimova (Lincoln SE) won 6-4 at number two to secure the doubles point.

The good day for Sun and Ibrahimova continued as both won in singles. Sun rolled by Betka Gombarova in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at number three with Ibrahimova needing a third set to win one spot lower (3-6, 7-5, 10-3).

Nationally-ranked Tatjana Stoll and Mayra Jovic won in straight sets for NSU with Melissa Vera clinching the dual with a 6-4, 6-3 win at number six.

UNK faces another nationally-ranked team next weekend in Southwest Baptist.
