Morning Win in Grand Island; MIAA Up Next

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team made quick work of the Oklahoma Baptist Bison, 6-1, Friday morning in Grand Island.

The Lopers, ranked seventh in the Central, improve to 8-5 while OBU, from the Great American Conference (GAC), falls to 2-8. OBU was ninth in the most recent Central Region rankings.

UNK surrendered just eight total points in doubles and won all three matches to go up 1-0. Sophomore Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) and freshman Vasilisa Polunova (Moscow) are now 5-3 at number one after a 6-3 victory.

The Lopers then swept number two through six singles with Polunova's number one matchup going three sets. Senior Yuxiu "Sherry" Sun (China) had a rare 6-0, 6-0 win at the fourth spot in the lineup with sophomore Claire Neil (Papillion) almost as dominant at number six (6-1, 6-0). Finally, Polunova rebounded from a first set loss to take the second, 6-3. With the dual decided, a single point decided the match and Kim Moosbacher won that.

Kearney hits the road this weekend to face MIAA rivals Emporia State and Washburn.
