Two Big Innings Propel No. 2 UCO at Patriot

Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos used two big innings to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 7-4 and 6-2, Monday afternoon at Patriot Park.

This double dip served as UNK's official home opener of 2019. Due to weather and field conditions the games were pushed back two days and also moved to Patriot Field #8.

The Bronchos (28-2, 10-0) improve to 8-0 on the road while the Lopers fall to 8-16 (4-6). UNK out hit the UCO in both games and by a 20-17 margin overall but stranded 19 on the base paths and committed six errors.

In game one the 'Chos erupted for five in the second to take control. The big set featured two doubles, a sac fly and three UNK errors. UCO then scored all six of its runs in the night cap during the top of the fourth. That key inning featured five hits including three doubles.

True freshman right hander Bailey McKittrick improved to a stellar 14-0 as she tossed her sixth complete game of the year in the opener. She gave up a deep leadoff homer to freshman sensation Carlee Liesch (2 for 4) in the first but then blanked UNK over the next four innings. McKittrick finished with four K's, no walks and worked around 12 hits.

Besides Liesch (Lincoln Pius), the Lopers got strong showings from Colorado senior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (3 for 4), Papillion junior first baseman Sara Sempek (2 for 4, one run) and Colorado sophomore designated player Karlee Arnold (1 for 3, two RBI's).

Liesch started game two with a shot to center but UCO's Bailey Thompson made a diving catch to record the out. That turned out to be a big play as UNK loaded the bases with two down against junior lefty Sydney McLeod. However, the UNL transfer got a fielder's choice to get out of the jam.

McLeod is now 12-2 after allowing no earned runs over five full innings. She worked around five walks and five hits thanks to three K's and some strong defense behind her. Finally for the 'Chos, sophomore righty Lauren Gibson allowed no earned runs in two innings of relief work.

Omaha freshman left fielder Jasmyn Broussard and Missouri junior center fielder Alexis Ray both went 2 for 4) while Hamilton finished 2 for 3 with a run scored from the cleanup spot. Finally, Papillion sophomore Sarah Handrahan and Kearney redshirt freshman Mo Vornhagen combined for seven K's in the circle.

UNK battles Northeastern State (20-13, 8-2) tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m.
