UNK Wins Home Finale, 6-1

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team took all three doubles matches and won five times in singles to defeat Missouri Western State, 6-1, Monday afternoon at Harmon Park.

This was UNK's home finale of the 2018-19 season. The dual was originally set to be played on Friday, April 12, but pushed back due to inclement weather. With the win the Lopers improve to 14-12 (3-6) while the Griffons fall to 11-12 (2-7).

Kearney will now be the seventh seed in the eight-team MIAA Tournament, held April 26-27 in Oklahoma City. Nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma will be the first round opponent. The complete bracket will be released later this week.

Senior Camryn Parnell (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and sophomore Claire Neil (Papillion) improved to 7-0 at number three doubles after blanking their Mo West counterparts. UNK had to work harder in the other two spots but both Loper tandems came away with 6-4 wins and thus the doubles point.

Neil then rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at number five singles, pushing her season dual win mark to 13. Next, 46th-ranked Vasilisa Polunova (Russia) and sophomore Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) won at the number one and two spots, respectively, in straight sets with senior Yuxiu "Sherry" Sun (China) rallying at number three in three sets to win her Kearney collegiate finale (5-7, 6-3, 10-8).

The Lopers close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon at Nebraska Wesleyan. That dual, recently added to the schedule, begins at 4:30 p.m.
