Postseason Chances End with Losses at Hays

Kearney, Neb. – The Fort Hays State Tigers out hit Nebraska-Kearney 30-8 to sweep a double header, 9-1 and 8-0, Saturday evening in Kansas.

These were the final MIAA games of the season for both teams. The Tigers (24-23, 13-13) and Lopers (18-24, 12-14) were both eliminated from the eight-team MIAA Tournament prior to the second game; four teams tied for fifth place with identical 14-12 records.

In winning both games in six innings Hays hit .484 (30 for 62) with seven doubles, a triple and home run. Leadoff hitter Katie Adler (5 for 6, four runs & one RBI) and two-hole hitter Terran Caldwell (5 for 8, three runs & one RBI) caused the most damage. In the circle juniors Hailey Chapman (12-12) and Michaelanne Nelson (10-10) both tossed complete games, combining for 12 strikeouts and no earned runs.

Hays started the day by scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to grab a 4-1 lead. Out hitting UNK by an 18-3 margin, the Tigers scored four in its half of the sixth to end things. Adler went 4 for 4 with two runs five others have multi-hit efforts.

Caldwell (3 for 4, two runs) was part of a 12-hit attack in the night cap as Hays scored three in the bottom of the second and five more in the sixth. Eight
Tigers registered a hit with the Lopers led by Papillion junior designated player Alexis Howe (2 for 3).

The two teams will play a non-conference double header on Sunday at Dryden Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. with UNK honoring Howe and third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.) on "Senior Day."
