UNK Wins Twice in Colorado; First Victories for Shafer

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team started its 2019-20 season by going 2-1 this weekend in Colorado.

After being swept by Metro State Thursday in Denver, the Lopers beat Colorado Mesa, 5-2, and Dixie State of Utah, 4-3, at the Colorado State-Pueblo Tournament on Friday. These were the first two career wins for UNK head coach Scott Shafer who took over the reins of the program this summer.

Overall the Lopers went 6-3 in doubles and picked up seven singles on the weekend. Newcomer Anatasia Kuzenanova (Czech Republic) went 2-1 at number two singles and teamed with junior Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) to be perfect at number one doubles. 36016

In the loss to Metro (3-0), UNK suffered third set losses at both number one and six singles. Turarbek and Kuzenanova came out on top in doubles, 6-3, with UNK tallying seven combined points in the other doubles matches.

The Lopers rebounded the next morning in Pueblo by sweeping doubles and winning three through six singles vs. Mesa (2-2). Papillion junior Claire Neil rolled at number six (6-2, 6-0) with Kansas freshman Brooklyn Hunter doing the same a spot higher in the order (6-3, 6-3).

Things were tough in the afternoon against a Trailblazer program (1-1) that'll move into Division I in the coming years. Hunter and Neil helped the Lopers grab the doubles point with a 6-1 win at number three and then the Blue & Gold won at one through three singles. The key victory came in the third spot as Kuzenanova slipped last Megan Lynch in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 10-9). Finally, freshman Trang Tran (German) secured the win with a straight sets decision at number two (7-5, 7-5).

UNK heads to the Augustana Invite in Sioux Falls next weekend.
