Lopers Hand Huskies First Loss, 7-4

Kearney, Neb. – Junior left fielder Nicole Spykstra hit a three-run homer and sophomore Kelsey Goodban threw four innings of strong relief to help Nebraska-Kearney beat St. Cloud State, 7-4, Friday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.

This game was part of the three-day Washburn Invite. UNK (8-8) is set to play Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls on Saturday.

Handing the Huskies (5-1) its first loss of 2020, the Lopers grabbed the lead for good thanks to a four-spot in the top of the third.  A leadoff walk and an infield put two ducks on the pond with Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) bringing them home with her third dinger of the spring. She finished 2 for 3 to push her season average to a team-high .450 (18 for 40). Another Loper scored in the inning thanks to a walk, single and St. Cloud error.

SCSU countered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Two infield singles, two errors and a wild pitch were the culprits with Colorado senior Erin Hallman striking out four and allowing no earned runs in three  innings of work.

UNK added two insurance runs in the sixth and then scored again in the seventh. Missouri senior center fielder Alexis Ray smacked a leadoff triple down the right field line to start the sixth with a single by Lincoln sophomore shortstop Abbie Vodicka (2 for 3, two runs) bringing her home. Finally Goodban (Lincoln Pius X) moved to 2-0 by fanning five and walking none over the final four innings.

St. Cloud came in having outscored its competition by a 34-3 margin but stranded eight bases runners today and didn't draw a walk
