UNK Falls to Springs and Unbeaten LCU

Kearney, Neb. – The Lubbock Christian Chaparrals got a strong relief outing by sophomore Taylor Franco and hits from five different players to down Nebraska-Kearney, 5-4, Saturday evening in Texas.

The game was part of the Lubbock Sports Collegiate Invitational. Earlier on Saturday UNK (2-2) lost to former RMAC rival Colorado-Colorado Springs, 8-4.

LCU (7-0), already with two wins over Top 25 squads, saw Franco pick up the win as she allowed one earned run over the final four innings. At the plate the Chaps scored two in the first and three in the fourth to remain undefeated.

The Lopers, finishing with six hits, jumped up 2-0 as senior shortstop Kaitlyn Johnson (Kearney) belted a two out, two-run shot to left in the top of the first. She now has three dingers this year after having two over the previous three seasons.

Kearney got a sac fly by redshirt junior designated player Nicole Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) in the third and took advantage of an LCU error to score again in the fifth. However the Lopers stranded the tying run at third in that inning and then went in order in the sixth and seventh. Overall Lincoln sophomore left fielder Carlee Liesch and Missouri senior center fielder Alexis Ray both went 2 for 4 with Lincoln sophomore Kelsey Goodban tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

UCCS (1-3) used a four-run second and a three-run fifth to open up a 7-2 lead. A nine-hit attack saw the eight and nine hole hitters, first baseman Peyton Reisman and right fielder Bryn Horton, go a combined 4 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Leadoff hitter Brianna Santos had a two out, three-run triple in the second with all of the Mountain Lion runs in the fifth being of the unearned variety.

The Lopers had eight hits and drew four walks but left nine runners on base. Johnson (1 for 1) hit a two-run homer to center in the sixth with Spykstra and Elkhorn sophomore second baseman McKenna Becker each collecting a hit and RBI. In the circle Goodban allowed no earned runs in three innings of relief work.

UNK faces the St. Edward's Hilltoppers and New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls on Sunday.
