Splitsville in Lubbock; UNK Returns to Texas Next Week

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman catcher Katie Gosker went 3 for 3 and knocked in a run to help Nebraska-Kearney edge New Mexico Highlands in eight innings, 5-4, Sunday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas.

The game was part of the three-day Lubbock Sports Collegiate Invite. UNK lost its early game on Sunday to St. Edward's of Texas, 14-6, to finish the weekend at 3-3.

UNK was up 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Megan Blake (Clay Center, Kan.) entered the game with and runners at second and third with one down. HU (1-5) used a single and double to start the rally and then DP Ashlea Ortega drew a walk from Blake. After a sac fly tied things, Blake managed to get a grounder to second to end the threat and inning.

With a runner placed at second to start the eighth the Lopers took the lead for good thanks to an error. Redshirt freshman Bri Healy (Omaha Central) came all the home from second after junior Emma Osowski (Omaha Skutt) laid down a successful bunt and reached safely due to an HU fmiscue.

UNK tacked on a key insurance run when Gosker (Blair) singled to center to bring home Osowski. Eight-hole hitter Brooke De La Garza (2 for 4) laced a two-out RBI single up the middle to ger the Cowgirls within one but Blake (1-1) got a pop up to second to end the game.

Besides Gosker and Blake, Osowski went 1 for 3 with two runs and smacked a two-run homer in the top of the second. That marks her third career dinger. Finally Missouri junior Sarah Handrahan allowed one earned run over 6.1 innings with the teams combining to strand 19 on the base paths.

The SEU Hilltoppers (5-1) scored four in the first and three more in the second to build a 7-0 lead in game one. They scored seven more times on the strength of 14 hits, four walks and four Loper errors. Only eight of SEU's runs were of the earned variety.

UNK saw Colorado senior Erin Hallman allow no earned runs in 2.2 innings of relief with senior center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.), redshirt junior designated player Nicole Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) and junior second baseman Kaylee Schutte (Elkhorn H.S.) each knocking in two runs.
