Wind-Battered Lopers Have 3-1 Weekend

Kearney, Neb. – Lincoln sophomore Kelsey Goodban tossed a seven-hit complete game and four different players knocked in a run to help Nebraska-Kearney down Central Missouri, 6-1, in the first game of a double header Saturday at Patriot Park.

The Jennies (10-5, 3-1) lost a 5-0 lead in the nightcap but scored two in the fourth to win 7-5. UNK (13-11, 3-1) went 3-1 on its first home weekend of the season.

It was an even windier day at the ballpark than Friday as gusts close to 40 miles per hour battered players and fans all afternoon. Not surprisingly it as a pitcher's duel in game one as Goodban (3-0) and UCM starter Paige Petefish (5-2) both had shutouts going through three innings.

UNK busted things open with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth featured three singles and a key two-out error by the Jennies. Junior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) hit a high pop up that drifted to left center for a run scoring single. On the play junior left fielder Nicole Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) scored all the way from first as she was running on contact with two down.

The Loper fifth featured an RBI double off the bat of sophomore shortstop Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius) and an RBI triple from senior center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.). In the circle Goodban fanned five, walked one and blanked UCM in six innings. The Jennies had two doubles and five singles but stranded eight on the base paths.

Central Missouri came out swinging in game two, scoring two in the fist and three more in the third. UNK countered with a five spot in its half of the third but then was shut out over the final four innings by reliever Gentry Wishard (2-2).

The first three Jennies in the lineup went a combined 4 for 11 with three runs and two RBI's with Wishard fanning four in 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. The key fourth inning featured a leadoff double, sac bunt, hit batter and infield single.

Kearney was paced by junior reliever Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) who threw three full innings of scoreless ball. At the plate Vodicka went 2 for 5 with an RBI from the leadoff spot with freshman catcher Katie Gosker 1 for 3 with two RBI's.

UNK heads to Northeastern State (12-8, 2-2) and Rogers State (19-8, 2-2) next weekend.
