Loper Golden Goal Comes Off Set Piece in Double OT

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Angelina Iocca headed in a corner taken by redshirt sophomore Cammie Davis in the 101st minute to lift Nebraska-Kearney to a 2-1 win over Newman Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The still short-handed Lopers (2-7-0, 1-1-0) earn its first MIAA win over 2021 and avenge two spring setbacks to the Jets (0-6-1, 0-2-0).

"The team deserves nothing more than that. They work hard every day in practice and with all the injuries we're facing right now … this is a great boost for them and kind of a reward for their never give up attitude," said UNK head coach Chloe Roberts.

The Lopers, having battled an unprecedented rash of injuries all season, tallied the game winner off a set piece just a minute into the second overtime period. Davis (Wichita) set up in the right corner and hit a beautiful ball to the center of the box where Iocca (Old Bridge, NJ) came in and headed past NU keeper Jackie Lari. It marks Iocca's first collegiate goal with Davis notching her third point of the fall. She started the scoring with a goal from around 15 yards eight minutes into the second half. The Jets fail to clear the ball and Davis found the lower right corner of the net.  Rainna Daharsh

"Our message (going into overtime) was you're going to keep fighting and you're going to worker harder than they are and you're going to want it more than they do," said Roberts. "In the first overtime period we were pinned in a little bit and I was getting a little worried. We couldn't get out … they were really attacking us."

The Lopers were poised for a 1-0 win in regulation but the Jets tallied a goal at 87:20 to force extra time. Freshman Reina Cline punched in a loose ball after a teammate intercepted a UNK goal kick and split two defenders to get into the box. All three players fell down with Cline coming in and managing to get the ball past freshman keeper Rainna Daharsh (Gretna). She did record five saves overall.

"Going into the second overtime we told them to calm ourselves down, play the way we play soccer, play the ball on the ground and get out. Start attacking them," said Roberts. "We finally got a goal off a set play which is awesome."

The teams combined for 26 shots and three corners with a total of nine players going all 102 minutes. Senior Perla Navarro (Los Angeles) and Davis had four shots apiece to pace the Kearney attack with Iocca at two. Next, Daharsh earns her first collegiate win in relief of an injured Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.) with redshirt sophomore Lily Engeman (Olathe, Kan.) and senior Kylee Moore (Omaha Burke) joining Navarro as Lopers to go the distance.

UNK hosts regionally-ranked Central Oklahoma on Sunday at 1 p.m.
