Lopers Can't Topple the Hillcats

Kearney, Neb. – The Rogers State Hillcats scored in the 14th and 64th minutes to down Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Claremore, Okla.

RSU (8-7-1, 3-6-0) wins a second straight game to keep its MIAA Tournament hopes alive and improves to 1-0-1 all-time vs. the Lopers (2-14, 1-8).

Junior Kori Watters took a pass from English freshman Libby Doyle to score just 14 minutes into the action. It marked the fourth goal of the year for Watters and the second assist for Doyle. Redshirt freshman keeper Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.) recorded a save in the fourth minute with the Lopers countering soon after as redshirt sophomore Cammie Davis (Wichita, Kan.) fired at shot off in at 8:07. However, freshman keeper Savannah Harvey stopped it, one of her five saves on the day.

Mounce stopped three more shots in the first half with redshirt sophomore Ariella Mesa (Olathe, Kan) having her shot saved by Harvey at 26:15. To start the second half, Mounce recorded two more saves with Harvey stopping a shot taken by redshirt freshman Aspen Brandich (Colorado Springs). Soon after, freshman Vanessa Gonzales took a pass from freshman Ashton Shepperson and scored at 64:26. Gonzales now leads RSU in both goals (six) and points (13) on the season.

Brandich had another shot on goal stopped by Harvey with Mounce ending the day with eight saves. Also for UNK, seniors Perla Navarro (Los Angeles) and Kassidy Kirsch (Rapid City, SD) and redshirt sophomore Payton Rhen (Omaha Skutt) got shots off.

The Lopers close out the 2021 season by hosting Fort Hays State and nationally-ranked Emporia State next weekend. The Friday game will start at 6 p.m.
